COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR SHROPSHIRE & TELFORD TO HELP DISADSVANTAGED UNEMPLOYED

The Community Foundation for Shropshire & Telford has been awarded a European Union grants programme to help unemployed people from disadvantaged communities across Shropshire and Telford prepare for the job market.

The grant, worth £119, 224, will specifically help fund small community based groups to run projects which increase confidence, develop skills, provide some experience of the workplace or provide simple guidance on how an unemployed person should present themselves to prospective employers both in person and on paper.

Lynne Carney, the Community Foundation’s Grants Officer, who will manage the scheme, says the programme will be operated through small community groups that are “uniquely placed to reach people that mainstream organisations often miss.

“Essentially we are seeking small local groups, with a turnover of less that £100,000, working with some of society’s most disadvantaged members ,to run projects which help people stand a better chance of getting a job. We see these grants as a real opportunity for local people throughout Shropshire and Telford to make themselves more employable. Because the grants are only be available until September 2009 we urgently want local community groups, working closely with unemployed disadvantaged people, to get in touch immediately”, she said.
